The World Beyond the Mirror

The World Beyond the Mirror
image of the day
“Rufus come back, no don’t go up there, mum you left the attic door open again” I yelled running after him. Suddenly he disappears.
“Rufus, here boy,” I say getting down on my knees looking under the old dusty furniture. I hear a meow coming from the old mirror.
“Oh no,” I say I walk over to the mirror “Rufus…”
I touch the mirror and my hand disappears into it. I gasp, a bit excited and nervous to go through but I know I have to go get Rufus. But what about mum? Oh, she’ll be fine She can survive on her own for what I thought was going to take 5 minutes, can’t she?
“Oh boy how did I get myself into this mess” I mutter under my breath?

I step into the mirror and into what seems to be another world. I walk around asking people where I am. Most all of them just pretend I am not there and continue to carry on doing what they were doing. Then I see a group of kids about my age, some a bit older.
“Um excuse me do you know where I am, I’m lost,” I say suddenly feeling nervous as they turn around. Maybe they aren’t my age. Some of them start laughing.
“We are in Paris,” One of them tell me, smirking.
“No, we are in the Sahara Desert” another one her age whispers to her. I start to feel silly. Two of them, more like my age, come over. They look a lot nicer than the other four.
“You’re actually in Beymir, it stands for beyond the mirror,” The girl says, she seems nice.
“Hi my name’s Zayne and this is Eva, my sister, she’s very bad at introducing herself,” The boy says grinning at his sister.
“Hey” Eva replies punching him on the arm “So I’m guessing you’re from the other side of ‘The Mirror’?”
“Yes, I am although the mirror seems to have shut behind me,” I say turning around pointing at the ‘invisible’ mirror.
“Oh we know where you have to go,” Says Eva.
“Do you? where?” I say pleading that they will tell “Oh also have you seen a ginger cat around here. He’s the reason I came through the mirror”
“Oh my gosh it’s going to be harder than I thought,” Says Zayne looking at Eva.
“Why?” I said interested.
“Because cats hate dogs right?” Eva tells me.
“Yes and why is that a problem?” I said even more interested now.
“The only place you can go to is called dog town so only dogs live there and it’s full of them and I mean full of them.” zayne says just spotting Rufus and pointing to him.
“But there is a portal just for animals so you could send him back.”
“Ok we will have to do that because there is no way I’m going through Dog Town with a cat.” I say looking at Rufus.
“We’ll come with you,” Eva says.
“Ok where do we go then?”
“I’ll open up a portal that you can send Rufus back to your house.” Says Eva and then she opens a portal just big enough to send Rufus through.
“Bye.” I say hoping he will get home safely. I send him through the portal and we head on our way to Dogtown.

When we get there I am so glad I didn’t bring Rufus here as the roads are spilling with dogs.
One big angry bulldog was standing guard. It looked like he was never going to let us through. Eva seems to persuade him to let us past while me and Zayne run past (scared of the HUGE dog).
“Where do we go now?” I asked excited to get home.
“Over here” Zayne called from a little shop “this is where the portal will come from”
“Ok, what do we have to do?”
“Sprinkle blossoms over it,” Says Eva. Just as she speaks a gust of wind brings a pile of blossoms to us.
“Here,” I say sprinkling the blossoms over the pot. Suddenly a purple and blue wave comes out and forms an oval. I look back at Zayne and Eva and realize that they look sad.
“Oh, where have you guys come from?” I asked
“Well actually we came from the same mirror as you did”
“What, how, I mean that’s impossible,” I said astonished.
“We were the two kids that lived in the house before you,” Says Eva looking at the ground.
“Do you mean the kids who got kidnapped,” I say wide-eyed.
“Yes, the kids who got ‘Kidnapped’” Says Eva with quotation marks.
“Hmm I have an idea, why don’t you both come back to my house and I’ll talk to my mum and see if she can like adopt you or something,” I tell them hoping mum would approve.
“What does adopt mean?” asked Eva.
“Wow, you have been stuck here for a while, haven’t you?” I say waiting for an answer but I don’t get one. “It means you would become my brother and sister.”
“Oh we would love that” Both Zayne and Eva say at the same.

So we hopped through the portal back home. I asked my mum if we could adopt Eva and Zayne, she loved the idea and said yes. It’s been two months since that adventure happened and I now have two adopted siblings, a brother and a sister we are the same age and do everything together.  “Oh and Rufus made it safely back home as well”

Probability Snail Race

Snail Race

Before the game- Randomly make each person two numbers and they are those for the rest of the game.
1) Set up your board and 12 snails
2) Make sure someone is in charge of moving each snail.
3) Take turns rolling two dice and add the numbers together.
4) Move that number snail one place along the board.
5) Keep playing until 3 snails make it across the finish line.

Our Results:
1st Place- 7
2nd Place-6
3rd Place- 5

We think that it would be great to get 7, 6 or 8 because they have a lot more numbers to add together that equal those numbers. But it doesn't always work with bigger numbers because if you get 12 or 11 you can only get 5 and 6 for 11 or 6 and 6 for 12.

Then we worked out the probability:

Our before/after school adventures! By Taylor, Sofia and Giselle

The Black Car
We were crossing the road -on our way to school- when all of a sudden this black car pulled up, and the tattooed driver inside, wound down his window and sweared at us. He pointed the finger then carried on driving, but we swore we saw him turn around and come back. Scared, we were hiding behind trees and Giselle was even crawling behind cars. We’ve never seen him since but the thought still haunts us.

The Incident of the Dog
One day while we were walking to school a friendly dog came up to us and started sniffing and licking us. He kept following us for a while (he was getting really annoying) and then out the blue he ran across the road, barely avoiding any cars. Taylor, Sofia and Giselle were so surprised and worried for the dog and then he ran across the road again and then it happened……...Bang! The dog actually got hit by the car.The lady in the car pulled over and started swearing ‘is this your dog’ ‘No’ we said ‘he just started following us’ and suddenly she turned a lot nicer ‘I’m so sorry. When I get to work I’m going to call the pound’ . Finally, when she drove away we noticed there was a dent in her car. Haunted,we carried on walking the dog finally walked away, then we started running.

The Fainting Man
We were walking down Middle Road, talking to some bikers, then out of the corner of my eye I saw a old man fall over on the concrete, he was bleeding-it was dripping . Giselle didn’t see him so we kept on walking then a guy hopped out of his car and helped him. I felt really bad for the elderly man and just as I was thinking that Giselle said “Should we go back?” So we went back to the guy who pulled up and said “Do you need any help?” Then the old man started talking again he said that he was going down to big barrel to get some drinks for the night because about 2 years ago his wife died so he gets a little lonely. I think we were about cry when he said that The guy who was helping him soon turned around and said “I think we are alright but thanks anyway.” As we started to walk away another car pulled up and went to help, we heard “Oh my gosh are you alright?’’ We we to far away to hear the rest. We haven’t seen the old man since but we hope he is feeling better!

Counting pavlovas
It was a normal morning and we were walking down middle road, when all of a sudden we noticed a pavlova and a bag of pita pit bread sitting on top of the op-shop bin. “Thats strange” but we thought nothing else of it. A few minutes later we saw 2 more pavlovas that were up on a letter box, and just like before, we carried on walking. Further up the road we saw 2 pavlovas more across the path. Not long after that we saw 1 bagel in the gutter, then a bag of pita pit bread on a car roof. Next we saw a loaf of bread down a driveway. “Hows this happening” we wondered. 2 ginger kisses stood proudly on letter boxes.Three wrappers laid strewn across the road. One bag of opened icing sugar was pouring out through a seat and onto the ground. And just as we thought this couldn’t get any worse we saw 3 meringues that were squashed on poles.

The Mandarin lady
We were walking down the path, when we saw this lady picking up mandarin peels. She saw us pass and stopped us. “Make sure you pick up your mandarin peels kids” the lady exclaimed. We had no idea what she was talking about. “Ok” we said looking at each other, confused. “ Have a great day children and remember not to leave mandarin peels on the ground’’ she shouted as we walked away. Then she pulled a face like this:

Mr pushy
One day while we were walking, Giselle skilfully started walking backwards. It was all going well until this rude man came past and pushed her off the path. Without saying excuse me or even sorry, the man walked past, completely ignoring the fact that Giselle could have got hurt. Whenever we walk past him now, we completely move out of the way so that the incident will not repeat.

SHINE!
Everyday when we walk to school a high school student, wearing a red helmet, bikes past singing. One day as he cycled past and Taylor dared Giselle to  yell out “Shine like a magnet!” But it came out wrong because she said “Jump like a magnet” Taylor cracked up laughing and almost landed on the pavement. Now, whenever he is rapping, singing or whatever else he is doing we shout out “GO SHINE!!!!!!”

Ordering and Comparing decimals!

Today Zoe and I ordered and comparing decimals. We took some cards out of the pack and randomly made them into a decimal and then we ordered them. Eg:

Wearable Arts

Our creation is called: Night Delight. It was made by Sofia V, Sofia L, Taylor, Zoe and Chloe is our model. The black dress represents the night sky and the stars represent the seven stars of Matariki. The basket has kai (aka food) in it, we think that this represents matariki because we think that to celebrate matariki you need a good feast. The food is potato and carrot and other things that you would find in a hangi. We put lots of hard work into it so we hope you enjoy!

Mother’s Day Poem

Mother’s Day Poem

My mum’s voice is warm, gentle and calm
Mum is usually puffing and panting from a long run
Her voice is sore from singing in the supermarket
That’s My Mum
My mum’s hair is as black as night.
Her eyes are crystal blue that shine ,like the sea
Mum’s smile shines like the sun
Her hair is always put up nicely for the evening
That’s My Mum
The room is always filled with her fresh baking straight from the oven
Perfume is always the centre of attention when mum is in the room
Her breath smells like a fresh cup of coffee in the morning
That’s My Mum
Her hands are warm and soft like a petal.
Mum’s feet are tired from a busy day at work

Porpoises or sharks???

Porpoises or sharks???

“Beat you down to the water”I shouted out to Jackie and Harrison as I sprinted along the water.
“Oh no you don’t” Jackie shouted back.
“I’m coming down too”I heard Mackenzie shout. I dived into the water and turned around to see them wind down the sand covering their eyes from the sand.

“It’s freezing” screamed Harrison, shivering.
“Come on get in” I said splashing Jackie and Harrison.Mackenzie was almost at the .
“When a wave comes dive at it” Harrison says.We do this for a while when I hear somebody shout something.
“What?” I said trying to get the sea water out of my ears.
“Look, over there, Dolphins!” Mackenzie pointed out.
“They’re porpoises, see the yellow line?” Harrison shouted.
“How far will they come in?” Mackenzie asked worried .
“Don’t worry they won’t come too close” I said hoping I’m right. We watch them for a while then we lost track of them.
“Aghhh where have they gone” Jackie screamed frantically looking around her. After what seemed like forever I spotted them.
“Over there when a wave comes up you will see them” I told them.
“Holy cow look at them, the golden stripe across their back is so cool!” Harrison said in between waves.  We watched them glide through the water their long noses so pointy. The dolphins come back and forth each time we lost sight of them.
“Look they are putting on a show” I said pointing out to sea.
“Wow they are doing back and front flips” pointed out Mackenzie.
“Oh yeah they are” said Harrison and Jackie in unison.
“I’m going back now it freezing!”
“Ok we’re staying here” Jackie and I told them. After a minute Harrison came running the hill.
“We have to go now” He shouted as it was hard to hear between the waves.
“Do we have to???” I asked putting on a lazy face.
“Yes mum and dad want to go home and have a shower” Harrison answered.
“Oh ok” I said getting up. We started walking up the sandy hill, Jackie and I constantly looking back and forth at the dolphins restaining to run back down.
“How are we supposed to eat with these?” I said looking down at my hands covered with sand.
“Go and  wash them off over there see that tap” Dad pointed to the tap. I walked over to the tap and washed my hands, I looked out to sea and saw that the dolphins had vanished
“They must have gone because we left” I laughed to myself. We all had a wonderful day that day and we all will never forget it.
